Owen Williams, CEO Wales Council for the Blind

What’s your professional background?

I was appointed as the Director of Wales Council of the Blind (WCB) in 2012 and I have over 20 year’s experience of working within the sight loss sector in Wales. I sit on a number of all Wales groups including Welsh Government’s Eye Health Care Steering Group and I am Chair of the Low Vision Service Wales Advisory Group. My background is in access technology and providing specialist assessments and advice but I have also worked on a number of projects within health and social care.

Why do you volunteer for Visionary and what makes it worthwhile?

I believe in the vision of providing services and support locally, within the community. Where and when needed. Having sight loss myself, I volunteer for Visionary to bring a Welsh and service-user perspective.

What do you think Visionary adds to the sector?

Visionary provides members with the opportunity to work together and share good practice. Having the ability to network is invaluable, as well as having a collective voice to be able to campaign and influence policy. Through its members and the voices of people with sight loss, Visionary is also able to influence service design and delivery, locally, regionally and nationally.
