Visionary’s commitment to Lived Experience Leadership and Employment

In April 2022, Visionary joined with another seven leading sight loss organisations to make a public commitment to increasing the number of blind and partially sighted people employed within our sector, including at senior management level. We are making this commitment in recognition of both the special value brought to our workforce by people with lived experience of sight loss, and the fact that the numbers employed within our sector are lower than might be expected.

We recognise that this needs to change and that we have a responsibility to set an example for other sectors. That’s why we’ve committed to specific actions and to accountability by reporting on our progress. As we make progress we will share what we’ve learned with the wider sector, including our colleagues and partners in local sight loss organisations, to help achieve our shared ambition of greater representation of lived experience.

We are also supporting our members to increase lived experience employment across the Visionary network. In collaboration with attendees of our Blind and Partially Sighted Leaders Forum, we have developed a statement for organisations across the sight loss sector. This is to ensure that it best reflects the voice of the communities we represent, and that it works for all organisations: large or small, local or national.
