Local sensory charity celebrates its volunteers with special thank you event
A charity that supports thousands of people with sensory loss in the Forth Valley has thanked its volunteers with a special event to mark Volunteer Week.
Forth Valley Sensory Centre (FVSC) has 50 volunteers who help with a range of activities and events at the centre. These include helping in their sensory and kitchen garden, running groups, driving centre users to events and activities, working in the café and carrying out odd jobs and DIY. The charity held an afternoon tea at Dobbie’s Garden Centre in Stirling at the start of June as part of the 40th year of Volunteer Thank You week.
FVSC has supported people with sensory loss and their families who live in central Scotland, including Stirling and Clackmannanshire, for more than 15 years. It acts as a community hub, offering support, advice, practical help, and social opportunities. The centre helps around 20,000 people every year and is funded by a mix of statutory funding and donations. The charity was recently awarded £200,000 for three years from the National Lottery Community Fund to tackle isolation and loneliness caused by sensory loss, and new services will take place in community venues and hubs throughout the area to increase access and availability.
Jean Armstrong, a volunteer gardener with FVSC“The event was absolutely wonderful. The food was delicious and it was so great to see all the volunteers together. Because we all volunteer in different areas, we don’t often see each other. So, it’s a lot of fun when we get the chance to relax together like this. We all really appreciate the Centre putting the event on for us."
Hannah Wilson, FVSC volunteer co-ordinator“At the centre, we think it’s incredibly important to thank our volunteers and show just how much we appreciate them regularly. We wouldn’t be able to operate without their vital support and we’re grateful for everything they do, no matter how minor it may seem to our volunteers, so during these events we like them to relax and make sure that we staff do all the work. We’re already planning our volunteer Christmas party.”
