Introducing Dave Steele – The Blind Poet

My name is Dave Steele, though many know me as The Blind Poet.
I am an award-winning poet, author, and advocate who has dedicated the past decade to raising awareness and providing hope to individuals and families affected by sight loss. My journey with Autosomal Dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a degenerative eye condition, has profoundly shaped my mission: to turn my own challenges into inspiration for others navigating similar paths.
Through my poetry, books, keynote speeches, and workshops, I strive to connect with people on a deeply personal level. My work captures the emotional highs and lows of living with vision loss while celebrating the resilience and determination that exists within all of us. To date, my words have reached millions worldwide, offering understanding and a sense of community to those who feel isolated or misunderstood.
One of the most humbling aspects of my work is hearing how my poetry is used by individuals within the blind and low vision community as a tool to explain their own experiences. For many, finding the words to articulate the emotional impact of vision loss can be incredibly challenging. My poems have become a voice for those who struggle to share their feelings, helping them connect with family, friends, and even strangers in ways they never thought possible. This has allowed so many to foster deeper understanding and empathy with the people around them.
In addition to my poetry, I am passionate about empowering others to share their own stories. My workshops go beyond writing about challenges—they encourage participants to celebrate their achievements and passions, showing them how powerful their voices can be.
