Scottish Tech Army – Soundscape

The Scottish Tech Army launched its Soundscape service on 31st August 2023, just hours before the original Microsoft version was shut down. Reproducing the app was possible because Microsoft had made the source code available under an ‘open-source’ licence, meaning that anyone interested in it could take a copy and make use of it.
The Scottish Tech Army undertook to reinstate the app because it was aware that those who had been using it were desperate not to lose it. We know that other technologies of great use to the blind and vision impaired community have been lost in the past and we believe that a new approach is required to secure these tools for the community’s use. Head of Partnerships for the Scottish Tech Army, Kirsty McIntosh will share the story of how Soundscape was given a new future and share the concept of developing a funding framework that could provide a sustainable platform for the future.
